Karren Brady explains why five sub change "is never a good idea" amid Jurgen Klopp stance

Karren Brady insists it is not wise to increase the amount of subs from three to five whilst the season remains ongoing.

There have been calls for the Premier League to increase the amount of changes permitted during the 90 minutes. Votes have been held but those in favour have been overpowered by those who want it to remain at three even though the majority of Europe's top leagues allow for five subs.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has been a major advocate of increasing the number, citing the amount of injuries as a reason to do so. The German believes allowing for more rotation will help with player fitness, which would be advantageous for all 20 clubs.

Brady, who is heavily involved at West Ham, believes making changes midway through the campaign is "never a good idea" which is one of the reasons clubs haven't backed the motion.

She wrote in The Sun : "We have voted on increasing to five subs three times. Each time it was rejected, mainly because the rule change was proposed after the season had started and a radical change halfway through a season is never a good idea. For some clubs, there are other reasons to vote against it."

Five subs are permitted in the FA Cup and in the Champions League. Klopp has made use of his deep Liverpool squad in those competitions, making a quadruple change in the recent win over Nottingham Forest. He was able to introduce Jordan Henderson, Luis Diaz, Thiago and Takumi Minamino just after the hour mark.

Brady did confess that increasing the amount of subs to five would eventually take place, but only further the gap between the country's elite. She claimed: "But two extra steps into the unknown are all but inevitable soon and the side-effects unpredictable except, simply, the bigger the club the wider the advantage."

Klopp has hit out at such suggestions. Burnley boss Sean Dyche has spoken out strongly against five changes, claiming the amount of quality available to the bigger teams would see them pull further ahead of the chasing pack. The Liverpool boss though doesn't see it that way.

He has said in the past: “Honestly, for people to suggest it is an advantage tactically has nothing to do with it [his argument]. Absolutely nothing. It’s absolutely not true that it gives us an advantage. Five subs is a must-have for the future. It should be now already but at least for the future because we have to make sure we give the players opportunity to save energy."
