Karnataka: Tension shifts from Bellare to Surathkal after youth's murder

MANGALURU: Tension prevailed in Muslim-dominated areas of Surathkal in Karnataka's Dakshina Kannada district on Friday following the murder of a youth on Thursday night.

The police have been put in a tight spot since the murder took place even as chief minister Basavaraj Bommai and home minister Araga Jnanendra were leaving for Bengaluru on Thursday evening, after visiting the kin of slain BJP worker Praveen Nettaru at Bellare in Sullia taluk.

The deceased, Mahammed Fazil (23), a resident of Mangalapete in Katipalla, was attacked with sharp weapons at Surathkal at around 7.30pm on Thursday. His body was taken from AJ Hospital to Muhiuddin Jumma Masjid at Mangalapete in Surathkal on Friday. A large number of people gathered at the masjid. The Mangaluru City Police have deployed additional forces to beef up security near the masjid and the surrounding areas.

After the postmortem, the body was taken in an ambulance to the masjid for the last rites.

City police commissioner N Shashi Kumar said that a thorough investigation will be conducted to ascertain the reason behind the brutal murder.

"Around 12 people, who were found moving around unnecessarily and violating the prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC, were detained from Surathkal since last night. Prohibitory orders are in place in Surathkal, Panambur, Mulky and Bajpe police station limits. All liquor shops will remain closed in these areas. If needed, prohibitory orders will be extended to other areas,” he said.
