BENGALURU: Karnataka state board students will have four formative assessments (internal exercise) and one summative exam for the current academic year (2021-22), the department of public instruction said in a circular on the new continuous and comprehensive evaluation pattern.
The department had decided to strengthen the internal assessment process so that students can be fairly evaluated in case summative exams cannot be held owing to the pandemic. Under the new pattern, students will be assessed throughout the year.
For classes 1-8, formative assessments will be conducted in September, October and December 2021 and January 2022. Each of these assessments will be conducted for 15 marks per subject. The formative assessment will consist of students’ performance in classes, self-learning, activities and worksheet submissions. The final exam will be conducted in April 2022.
For classes 1-5, a written paper on 20 marks and 20 marks oral exam will be conducted for the summative assessment. For English, students will take a written exam for a total of 10 marks and an oral exam for 20 marks.
For classes 6-8, 30 marks written and 10 marks oral exam will be conducted. Sum of 60 marks from formative and 40 from summative exams will be taken for final score.
Summative assessments get higher weightage for classes 9 and 10. Formative exams, each for 50 marks, will be conducted in September, October and December 2021 and January 2022. As part of the formative assessments, students will submit two activities of 15 marks each and take a written test of 20 marks. The 200 marks scored will later be reduced to 20.
Their final exam will be for 80 marks. The total 100 marks will be derived from a total of 20 in formative and 80 in summative exams.
Teachers will have to continue with continued learning processes including online classes and lessons through WhatsApp, television and radio and remain in touch with students. The state government had earlier announced that on-campus classes for grades 9 to 12 will start from August 23.
