Karen's Diner is hiring staff who will be trained to be rude and mean to customers

A restaurant where staff will be trained to insult and be rude to customers is hiring for its first Welsh location. Self-proclaimed "bad service" chain Karen's Diner is set to open in Newport's Friars Walk Shopping Centre in February, having boomed in popularity since first opening in Sydney, Australia in 2021.

The restaurant has become a Tik Tok sensation for its deliberately rude staff whose job it is to chuck menus by your feet, insult customers and force diners to play games as you tuck into your burger and chips. The restaurant is now advertising for servers and kitchen staff at its soon-to-open Newport location, for those of you who pride yourselves on quick-witted quips and insults.

If you're interested in applying though, be warned - it's not enough to just be "absolutely awfully rude." In its Facebook post advertising the roles, Karen's Diner said: "Well it’s about bloody time we recruited, you lot have been well an truly polluting my DMs, BEGGING me for a job. Well, here’s your chance. We are recruiting kitchen staff, and Karen servers."

"So, if you think you’ve got what it takes to be absolutely awfully rude, then give it your best shot through the link below, you never know, you could end up joining the Karen fam! Now, obs you can’t JUST be rude (sadly), you’ve also got to be bloody hilarious, witty, above 18, and experienced in working in a fast-paced restaurant.

"This job is every customer service workers DREAM, because who wouldn’t want to be rude to customers? We get a lot of applications, so make sure to try and stand out and impress us, embody that inner Karen and show us the sass!"

If you've worked in hospitality before, you'll know that there are some occasions where it takes every last ounce of patience to remember 'service with a smile' and 'the customer is always right.' But if it's a bit of banter, insults and tossing pleasantries out the window whilst serving up tasty food, this might just be the job for you.

A server will earn between £8.50 and £10.50 an hour and Karen's are looking for full-time, part-time and flexible staff with "a passion for sass, being rude to customers and good banter." Applicants should have a minimum of six months' experience in hospitality, and there will be in-house training.

Kitchen assistants will earn between £7.50 and £10.50 an hour and at least one year's experience in kitchens, cooking or catering is required. To find out more or apply for a kitchen assistant's job click here or to apply for a server's role click here.
