Karen Gillan offers simple advice to new Doctor Who companion Millie Gibson

Karen Gillan has offered new Doctor Who companion Millie Gibson some advice as she joins the BBC sci-fi show.

The Inverness-born actress, 35, played Amy Pond on the popular TV series alongside Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor and Arthur Darvill, who played her on-screen husband Rory. The Scots actress, who is currently promoting the third and final instalment of Guardians of the Galaxy, left the BBC series in 2013 but has remained a firm fan-favourite.

Coronation Street actress Millie, 18, was announced as Doctor Who companion Ruby Sunday last year alongside Ncuti Gatwa as the next incantation of the Time Lord.

Over a decade on from her Doctor Who exit, Karen has offered some simple advice to newcomer Millie. "I think just enjoy it," she told Radio Times. "Your life's about to turn upside down, but it's... you know, just make sure that you keep all of your people around you and your support system and just enjoy it."

She added: "It is the most exciting thing to go on adventures with the Doctor in the TARDIS. It's like the best thing ever!"

This comes after Karen previously discussed a return to the BBC series, and refused to rule out the possibility. She said: "It's always nice when people appreciate anything that you've done. But no, it's cool to see that people are still intrigued by Amy Pond and whether she could return. Maybe, maybe not – I don't know!”

Scots-Rwandan actor Ncuti Gatwa has been confirmed as the 15th doctor and was spotted filming the show in Bristol. Ncuti, 30, will be taking over the Tardis once Doctor Who fans say goodbye to David Tennant again after the 60th Anniversary Special.

Speaking about Ncuti's casting, Karen gushed over the Sex Education star and praised his acting ability. “My first reaction to both of them being cast was excitement," she said.

"I sort of feel like they're going to inject a whole new lease of life – like it really got my attention. When I saw both of them, I was like, 'OK, I'm ready to jump into this now.'"

She added: "And it's just exciting, and it's new, and he's clearly brilliant because I've seen him in other things. So I think it's a really good piece of casting.”
