Chicago Fire, NBC’s long-running firefighter series, bids farewell to Kara Killmer, who has been a part of the show for a decade. Killmer joined the show in September 2014, replacing the late Leslie Shay. She portrayed Sylvie Brett, the Paramedic in Charge of Firehouse 51, and also appeared in Chicago Med and Chicago P.D.
In November 2023, it was announced that Season 12 of Chicago Fire would be Killmer’s last. The reason for her departure was revealed recently. Killmer expressed that she felt her time as Sylvie had come to an end and is eager to explore new projects. She mentioned her gratitude for portraying a first responder and working with real firefighters and paramedics.
Killmer described Sylvie’s character arc as reaching a natural conclusion, from being dumped at the altar to finding love and fulfillment in her career. Despite leaving the show, Killmer hinted at a possible return in the future, similar to her co-star Jesse Spencer.
Sylvie Brett’s final episode, titled “Port in the Storm,” airs on February 28. The episode features the wedding of Sylvie and former Firehouse 51 Captain Matthew Casey. Killmer expressed satisfaction with the culmination of their relationship and her character’s journey.
Instead of introducing a new character, Chicago Fire will see Violet Mikami, played by Hanako Greensmith, stepping into the role of Paramedic in Charge. The show’s showrunner, Andrea Newman, highlighted Mikami’s growth as a character and her new leadership position.
