Emerging superstar Kaoru Mitoma admits he gave a transfer to Celtic real thought before seizing on the chance to join Brighton.
The 25-year-old has been a revelation with the English Premier League upstarts and has thrived under both Graham Potter and his highly-rated successor Roberto De Zerbi. Mitoma states interest from Ange Postecoglou upon his Celtic arrival was flattering, however, he admits the chance to compete in the world's best league proved too much to turn down.
Speaking to Optus Sport, the Japan international said: “I was flattered, but also I knew that the Premier League has the highest level of football in the world. This was why I accepted Brighton’s offer straight away. I did give some time to think about Celtic too, however, my desire to play in the strongest league in the world was very high, as well as my desire to play with and against the best players in the world."
Mitoma spent last season on loan at Brighton link-up club Union Saint Gilloise and now the 25-year-old is thriving on a weekly basis. He came through a similar path to Reo Hatate with both starring at university level before forming a part of the wildly successful Kawasaki Frontale side which secured consecutive J-League titles.
And now Mitoma admits his exploits have made Brighton must-see TV in his homeland – much like Celtic with their Japan stars. He added: "A lot more people in Japan have started to watch Brighton and the Premier League these days. I have also noticed that I am getting more exposure back home, so this is all great to hear."
