Kansas Mom Detained During Green Card Interview, Family Worries About Access to Diabetes Medication

A Kansas mother was detained by immigration authorities during a green card interview in Kansas City, leaving her family devastated and fearful for her health as she remains in detention without reliable access to her diabetes medication.

Rosmery Alvarado, 42, originally from Guatemala, applied for a green card after her husband, Nixon Moran, a naturalized U.S. citizen from El Salvador, completed his own lengthy immigration process, the Kansas City Star reported.

Although her family expected a routine spousal interview, Alvarado received an unusual, lawyer-bypassing summons directly by mail—an early sign something was wrong.

During the interview in the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) office, officers assured Alvarado and her husband that everything looked in order. However, immediately after Nixon was asked to step outside, two ICE agents arrested Alvarado without warning.

She was transferred to the Chase County Detention Center, where her family later learned two unresolved deportation orders—one dating back to her minor years—had triggered her detention.

Alvarado's lawyers have appealed to the Board of Immigration Appeals to halt her deportation, but if denied, she could be deported to Guatemala within two weeks. Her family is especially worried about her survival, given her diabetes, high blood pressure, and history as a breast cancer survivor—conditions that require consistent medical care not guaranteed in detention.

"She told us that she was scared and that she probably cried to herself throughout the whole night, that it was cold," Alvarado's daughter said. "She lives in a very poor part of Guatemala, and I just would hope that if she's there, that we could provide medical assistance for her."

As appeals move forward, Alvarado's case highlights growing concerns over immigration enforcement tactics at USCIS offices. Her family, meanwhile, is left scrambling for solutions.
