As Kansas lawmakers gear up for a special session, they are considering a plan to lure the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals to Kansas by financing new stadiums. The proposal involves authorizing state bonds for stadium construction, with the intention of paying them off using revenues from sports betting, the Kansas Lottery, and new tax dollars generated in and around the new venues.

The rivalry between Kansas and Missouri, dating back 170 years, is reigniting as Kansas aims to entice the teams just 25 miles west across the state line. While research suggests that pro sports franchises do not significantly boost local economies, Kansas officials are motivated by the prospect of redirecting spending from Missouri to Kansas.

The historical rivalry between the two states, rooted in events preceding the Civil War, has extended to sports and economic competition over the years. Missouri officials are equally determined to retain the teams, viewing them as sources of pride and economic assets.

Despite the lease for the current stadium complex running through 2031, Kansas legislators argue that decisions regarding new or renovated stadiums must be made soon to meet the deadline. Promises of state-of-the-art facilities capable of hosting major events like the Super Bowl and Final Fours are being used to entice the teams.

The rivalry between Kansas and Missouri intensifies over the potential relocation of teams.

While Kansas is pushing for the relocation, Missouri lawmakers are not rushing to propose alternatives, with Governor Mike Parson emphasizing that the competition is still in its early stages. Both states are set to hold primary elections soon, with the issue of subsidizing pro sports teams likely to be a significant factor.

Economists have long criticized public subsidies for stadiums, citing studies that show minimal economic benefits. Despite this, the push for stadium financing in Kansas has garnered support from lobbyists and business groups, presenting it as a unique opportunity to attract the successful Chiefs franchise.

The allure of hosting an NFL team, with its high valuation and media appeal, is a driving force behind the efforts to secure the Chiefs' move to Kansas. The debate over subsidizing sports teams continues, with differing perspectives on the economic impact of such investments.
