Kansas Jayhawks basketball wins Big 12 double overtime thriller over Texas Tech, 94-91

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Kansas followed its remarkable comeback victory over Kansas State on Saturday in Manhattan with a 94-91 double-overtime win over Texas Tech on Monday at Allen Fieldhouse.

Ochai Agbaji hit seven 3s and scored a career-high 37 points while Christian Braun added 15 points and David McCormack 13 points as the No. 5-ranked Jayhawks improved to 34-0 in the 19-year Bill Self era in home games played as part of ESPN’s Big Monday.

Agbaji hit 13 of 23 shots, including 7 of 12 3s, as KU overcame a 33-point performance from Tech’s Bryson Williams and 17-point outing from Kevin Obanor.

Jalen Wilson had 11 rebounds and nine points for KU, including a game-winning free throw with 14 seconds left in the second overtime, giving KU a 92-91 lead.

Braun hit two free throws with 10.1 seconds remaining and KU survived a missed 3-pointer from Terrence Shannon on Tech’s final possession.

KU (17-2, 6-1 Big 12) improved to 75-20 all-time on Big Monday since the inception of the Big 12 in 1996-97. Roy Williams’ squads went 11-1 in home Big Monday games during his years as KU coach.

KU avenged its 75-67 loss to Texas Tech (15-5, 5-3) on Jan. 8 in Lubbock. Since that game, KU has won five in a row. KU overcame a brilliant scoring outing from Williams. Agbaji scored 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting while Wilson had eight rebounds and KU led 36-30 at halftime.

Remy Martin had four points and three assists while playing 14 minutes the first half as Dajuan Harris had two early fouls and played six minutes in the half. He had two points and no assists at the break.

Williams scored 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting in the first half for Tech. He hit two 3s and was 5-of-8 from the field in the first 20 minutes. KU led by as many as nine points (30-21) late in the half.

The Jayhawks led by 12 points (66-54) with 9:04 left. Tech had it down to 70-64 at the final TV timeout with 3:47 remaining in regulation. It was 72-65 KU at 2:59.

Obanor missed the second of two free throws but Shannon rebounded and kicked to Warren, who hit a 3 to cut the gap to 72-68 at 2:52. Agbaji scored to make it 74-68 KU at 2:39, but Obanor scored and after a Wilson miss, Obanor scored again to make it 74-72 KU at 1:28.

After a Harris miss, Tech’s Shannon was fouled at :53.7. He missed the first free throw, then made the second and it was a one-point game at 74-73.

Self called timeout at :47.7 and 25 seconds left on the shot clock on the next possession. Agbaji missed the first of two free throws, then made the second to give KU a 75-73 led at :40.8.

On Tech’s next possession, Kevin McCullar missed and Agbaji rebounded but it was ruled he stepped on the end line at 19.2 seconds. After a review, Tech kept the ball.

Shannon was fouled by Jalen Wilson at 12.8 seconds and Tech down two. He both free throws to tie it at 75. KU had a final possession.

KU called time after getting the ball past midcourt at 11.5 seconds. Agbaji attempted a deep 3 in front of the KU bench guarded by McCullar. He missed and the game went to OT.

KU led 77-75 early in OT on a bucket by Wilson, but Williams scored five straight for Tech, which led 80-77 at 3:24.

Agbaji missed the first of two free throws at 2:24, then made the second and KU trailed by two (80-78). It was 83-80 at 1:49 when Warren put up a shot and McCormack was called for goaltending, making it 85-80 at 1:21.

Agbaji then scored on a goaltend by Williams at 1:09 and Tech led 85-82. Agbaji was fouled on a drive and went to the line at :31.5. He made the first free throw and missed the second to make it 85-83 Tech.

After a foul by Harris, Mylik Wilson was long on the first of two free throws at :23.9. He then made the second to make it 86-83. Agbaji drilled a 3 with 7.3 seconds left. It forced a second OT as Shannon fired up a deep 3 that missed at the buzzer.

In the second OT, Williams banked in a 3 to give Tech a 91-89 lead at 3:17. KJ Adams put in a stickback rebound bucked for KU to tie the score at 1:47. Ultimately, Wilson hit one of two free throws at 1:08 to break the tie and Braun’s two free throws at 10.1 gave KU the three-point cushion to survive the final shot.
