A Kansas inmate reportedly stabbed to death by his cellmate allegedly laid dead in his cell for "two whole days" before anyone noticed, according to family members.

Brooks Vonthaer, 40, died from "blunt trauma and stab wounds," according to a copy of his death certificate obtained by the Topeka Capital-Journal. However, the certificate stated he suffered the injuries on October 20, 2024, two days before he was found dead by jail authorities.

"He laid in there dead for two whole days," Tiffany Vonthaer, the man's sister, told the outlet.

A public affairs specialist for the Kansas Bureau of Investigation told the Capital-Journal that they "believe the dates you have are correct," confirming that Brooks Vonthaer was found dead on October 22, 2024.

The Kansas Department of Corrections said officials found the 40-year-old unresponsive in his cell around 5 p.m. on October 22. Medical personnel declared him deceased soon after, with correctional authorities noting he had sustained "multiple fatal injuries."

Brooks Vonthaer's cellmate, a 34-year-old man, was identified as a suspect and remains in custody. As of earlier this week, no charges had been filed against the unnamed man in connection with Vonthaer's death.

Vonthaer had been serving a five-year sentence after being convicted of aggravated assault, criminal trespass, theft and criminal damage. He had a possibility of being released in late May, KAKE reported.

He was described as "an amazing artist" and someone who "loved to live life to the fullest" in his obituary. Vonthaer had three daughters.
