Kanayo Megwa signs new Hibs deal as starlet makes loan transfer to Kelty Hearts

Kanayo Megwa has been handed a new two-year deal with Hibs as he heads out on loan until the summer.

The versatile defender - who can play both at centre-back and right-back - has penned fresh terms in the capital until 2025 and will now ply his trade in senior football at Scottish League One level with Kelty Hearts for the remainder of the campain under John Potter.

Kanayo, who joined the Hibees in 2021 has gone from strength to strength and was one of the shining lights for the Under-19s in Europe and with the Hibs Development squad. That form and promise has landed him spots in Lee Johnson's first team matchday squad on several occasions but he will now go out for a taste of first-team action. He will continue to play and train with the Dev squad as part of the deal.

Hibs Academy Director, Steve Kean told the Hibs official website: “Kanayo has been one of the standout performers for us this season and is thoroughly deserving of his new deal.

“He has really developed since he joined the Club and has shown he is comfortable playing in several different positions.

“In the short-term, his loan move to Kelty Hearts will give him a good opportunity to experience regular senior football at a high level, which will put him in good stead for fighting for a place in the Hibs First Team squad next season.”

A Kelty Hearts statement read : "Kelty Hearts FC are delighted to announce the signing of defender, Kanayo Megwa, on loan from Hibernian until the end of the season.

"The 18-year-old joins the Maroon Machine after an excellent European campaign with Hibernian Under-19s, who beat the likes of Nantes and Molde to set up their exciting tie against Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Youth League.

"Kanayo is predominately a right-back who will battle to earn a place in John Potter’s starting XI. He will wear the number 2 shirt."
