Kamaru Usman claims he will fight Canelo Alvarez for $100m despite Gennady Golovkin deal

UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman claims he will fight Canelo Alvarez in September - despite the Mexican agreeing a deal with Gennady Golovkin.

Alvarez will take on Dmitry Bivol on May 7 in Las Vegas before taking on Golovkin in September - assuming the Kazakh beats Ryota Murata in April.

But Usman, who is currently recovering from injury, claims he will jump the queue to fight Alvarez, after he defends his UFC title against Leon Edwards in July.

"In 2022 I'm going to shock the world. July, International Fight Week, I'm gonna fight Leon Edwards," he told TMZ. "God willing I get through Leon Edwards, September, Mexican Independence Day, I will stop Canelo Alvarez.

"Absolutely I see myself winning the fight, everything can't be done until it's done. We're talking nine figures, for sure."

Alvarez has not ruled out a clash with Usman, but not until he has secured his legacy.

"Pay day, it's a pay day, I know," he told The MMA Hour. "Maybe, why not? My trainer told me about it but it's not on my mind.

"I want a really great legacy for my career, then we can talk about it."

Alvarez has agreed a two-fight deal with Eddie Hearn which could be extended to a third bout in December.

Ilunga Makabu and John Ryder are options for his fight with 2022 - meaning Usman will have to wait until at least 2023.

Usman was last in action last November when he outpointed Colby Covington in their title rematch.

The Nigerian had surgery on his hand last month and will then turn his attention to a clash with Brit Edwards.

The pair previously met over six years ago when Usman won by unanimous decision.
