Kamala Harris says she would appoint a Republican to her cabinet if she won election

Kamala Harris has said she would appoint a Republican to serve in her cabinet if she is elected as president.

The Democratic nominee announced the intention in an interview with Dana Bash on US news outlet CNN

Ms Harris, the current vice president, said she had spent her career “inviting diversity of opinion” and wished to continue in this spirit.

She said: “I think it’s important to have people at the table when some of the most important decisions are being made that have different views, different experiences.

“And I think it would be to the benefit of the American public to have a member of my Cabinet who was a Republican.”

Joe Biden does not have any Republicans in his cabinet but did appoint John McCain’s widow Cindy as ambassador to the United Nations Agencies for Food and Agriculture.

The president also appointed former Republican senator Jeff Flake as US ambassador to Turkey.

Ms Harris did not speculate as to who she may appoint for what position.

She appeared alongside Tim Walz, her running mate for November’s election, where they will take on Republicans Donald Trump and JD Vance

She also used the interview to double down on her green credentials and said these values had “not changed”.

“You mentioned the Green New Deal,” she said in reference to the ideology of addressing climate change alongside achieving other social aims

“I have always believed that the climate crisis is real, that it is an urgent matter to which we should apply metrics that include holding ourselves to deadlines around time.

“We did that with the Inflation Reduction Act.”

Ms Harris added: “My value around what we need to do to secure our border – that value has not changed. I spent two terms as the attorney general of California prosecuting transnational criminal organisations, violations of American laws regarding the illegal passage of guns, drugs and human beings across our border.

“My values have not changed.”

Mr Trump, meanwhile, spent Thursday at a Michigan steel plant - where he held a rally with supporters.

The Guardian reported that he called Ms Harris a “Marxist” and a “fascist” while he also criticised the immigration policies implemented under current president Mr Biden.

“Your long economic nightmare will very soon be over,” Mr Trump said.

“When was the last time you heard about the American dream? They don’t talk about it. They copy everything else I do so I guess that’ll be that they’ll be copying that.”
