42 years ago, Kamala Harris arrived at Howard University as a freshman and was immediately drawn to the area of campus known as the Yard. This space became her favorite place to hang out, where she could observe the diverse student body engaging in various activities.

In her memoir, Harris reflected on the Yard as a vibrant hub where students from different backgrounds came together. She described scenes of students laughing, engaging in deep discussions, and participating in a range of activities that showcased the diversity of the student body.

Now, after a fast-paced campaign that has brought her close to making history, Harris is returning to the Yard this week to set up her Election Night headquarters. The choice of Howard University's Yard holds symbolic significance for Harris, as it represents a pivotal period in her life.

During her time at Howard, Harris was actively involved in campus life. She ran her first campaign for freshman class representative, facing a formidable opponent whom she considered her toughest rival. Known for her debating skills, Harris was often seen carrying a briefcase around campus and held leadership positions in organizations like the economics society.

One of the most notable aspects of Harris's time at Howard was her membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha, the historic Black sorority founded at the university in 1908. This affiliation with AKA further deepened her connection to the university and its rich legacy.

Reflecting on her upcoming return to Howard University, Harris expressed a sense of coming full circle. She described the opportunity to be back at her alma mater on Election Night as a moment of significance and reflection on her journey since her days as a student.
