New federal filings reveal that Kamala Harris has a significant financial advantage over Donald Trump as the presidential campaign enters its final weeks. Harris, the Democratic nominee, broke grassroots fundraising records in August, raising nearly $190 million directly to her campaign. This amount quadrupled the $44.5 million raised by the Trump campaign during the same period.
In terms of spending, Harris outpaced Trump by burning through about $174 million in August, with a major portion allocated to advertising. The Trump campaign, on the other hand, spent $61 million, primarily on media buys. Despite the spending discrepancy, Harris entered September with $235 million in available cash, compared to Trump's $135 million.
Democrats have also seen a surge in fundraising for congressional battles, with the Democratic committees outpacing their Republican counterparts. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee raised $22.3 million compared to the National Republican Campaign Committee's $9.7 million. The DCCC also holds more cash on hand, $87.3 million to the NRCC's $70.8 million.
Outside groups have ramped up their activities, with a pro-Trump super PAC spending over $88 million in August on independent expenditures. On the Democratic side, a super PAC supporting Harris raised nearly $37 million, with a significant contribution of $30 million from Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz.
Overall, Harris's fundraising dominance has given Democrats an edge in advertising bookings and social media presence. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and the National Republican Senatorial Committee raised comparable amounts last month, reflecting the competitive landscape in Senate races.
As the election draws near, the financial strength of candidates and party committees will play a crucial role in shaping the outcome of key races across the country.
