Former Leeds United midfielder Fabian Delph announced his retirement from football on Tuesday evening. Delph made over 300 appearances at club level during his career and was capped on 20 occasions by England, featuring in the Three Lions’ run to the World Cup semi-finals in 2018.
He is seen as one of the most talented youngsters to emerge from Leeds’ academy in the last 15 or so years, moving to Premier League side Aston Villa at the age of just 19 for £8 million – a fee viewed by many supporters as not enough. Delph also went on to play for both Manchester City and Everton, winning the Premier League title twice at the former.
On the decision to hang up his boots, Delph said on Instagram: “So today I announce my retirement with nothing but happiness and gratitude for what this beautiful game has given me. Massive shout out to my family, friends, players and staff from the amazing clubs I have been fortunate enough to represent as well as the support I have had from the fans.”
