Kai Rooney emulates dad Wayne with superb goal for Manchester United under-12s vs Man City

Kai Rooney, the eldest son of Manchester United legend Wayne, scored a sublime goal in the club’s under-12s derby clash with Manchester City at the weekend.

The youngster sized the goalkeeper up before curling the ball into the top corner of the goal. His dad shared the video on his Instagram stories with the caption: “Nice goal @kairooney.10.”

The 12-year-old joined the United academy in 2020 and scored four times against Liverpool earlier in the season. Red Devils fans will hope he can go some way to possibly replicating the feats his father achieved.

Wayne Rooney is United’s all time top scorer, netting 253 goals during his time at Old Trafford. He scored a number of important goals in Manchester derbies too, none more memorable than his overhead kick against the ‘noisy neighbours’ in 2011.

After stints at boyhood club Everton and US franchise DC United, Rooney moved to Derby County as a player-manager in 2020. He hung up his playing boots for good last year to concentrate on his coaching role amid the Rams’ financial difficulties.

In all, the club has been docked 21 points this season and, despite a spirited effort, look to be heading down to League One. He still keeps a keen interest in United, of course, especially with Kai thriving in the academy set-up.

The young prospect also plays alongside Cristiano Ronaldo’s son, Cristiano Jr, who joined the United youth system in February. Previously speaking about Kai’s footballing progress and signing with the Red Devils academy, dad Wayne said: “I’m a proud dad.

“He did have other options, other clubs to go to but he decided he wants to sign for Manchester United, so it was his decision and not mine."
