A solemn atmosphere at the Bridge to welcome the players as the fans look towards the unknown future. You would naturally expect the fans to be chanting at the top of their lungs, shouting for the punishments they have to endure through no fault of their own. But no, the away section led the songs, and the atmosphere had been set.
Chelsea hosted Newcastle in what could be their last home game with casual fans in the stadium. How scary is that? The scenes were eerie as it was almost certain that the Magpies came to make a statement. They have inherited new owners whose wealth is unmatched across Europe. To be fair, Chelsea could do with their level of riches to maintain their prestige status right now.
A weird rivalry could be brewing. The Newcastle fans seem up for it, but the Blues just needed the match to be over and done with.
Stamford Bridge has never quite been the loudest stadium in the League. In fact, throughout my years of attending matches, the loudest games are usually on Champions League nights, but this felt different. The reoccurring news during the week probably sucked the hope out of the Chelsea fans.
The camera zoomed into Marina Granovskaia and Petr Cech side by side, with the pair looking exhausted. It was going to take something outstanding to lift the fans' spirits again, and of course, who else to call on other than Kai Havertz.
The wonderkid just doesn't stop giving us hope—first, a clean strike against Norwich to seal the deal in midweek. Now a smooth run and a cool left foot to raise the atmosphere inside Stamford Bridge. It only took 89 minutes to do it.
The away section was finally silenced following their brutal attack on Chelsea's ownership and current situation. Rounds of "Mike Ashley, He's coming for you" circulated before the Chelsea fans made their comeback. The retaliation chants from the Blues fans couldn't keep the Magpies quiet for long.
It felt as though this particular match symbolised Newcastle's claim to becoming a Premier League powerhouse with their new owners at the wheel. I don't blame them. They're on the rise, and from experience, we know exactly what it is like to have a wealthy owner who wants success for the Club. Despite their future looking bright, they were unable to stop the true heirs of European royalty.
They may have new owners, but we are still the Champions of the World. And as it stands, they'll never sing that.
