Kai Havertz highlights next Graham Potter Chelsea transfer decision amid Aubameyang question

Chelsea have addressed a number of major problems throughout their squad in the last two transfer windows, with a new player acquired in every position. Granted certain roles such as the goalkeeper and striker have seen additions for the future with Gabriel Slonina and David Datro Fofana filling those spots.

A lack of top-quality additions in both has come back to bite the Blues on numerous occasions this season with Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga sharing the gloves throughout the season with both struggling to hit consistent form. At the tip of the attack Kai Havertz, who isn't considered to be a natural number nine, has been the main recipient of the sole striker spot in the team.

Despite Chelsea's minimal goal tally in the Premier League where in comparison only seven teams have scored fewer goals than them, Graham Potter defended his team's lack of a natural forward up front.

"We have tried to address it in terms of helping the team attack better," he said. "You can zoom into one position but in the last four or five years teams have won the Premier League without a recognised centre-forward.

"I understand the point but it is better for the team to attack better, to play better, to create more chances, to be more dangerous in attack and that will solve that problem."

After scoring the winner against Crystal Palace, Havertz was again named in the starting XI to face Fulham with summer acquisition Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang omitted from the entire matchday squad on the same day he was left out of Chelsea's Champions League knockout stage squad to accommodate three new signings.

Criticism has been thrown the way of Havertz before with many claiming he is not good enough to lead the line on his own and his first-half performance against the Cottagers, to a certain extent, justified those claims.

The German international had three golden opportunities in the first 45 minutes but was unable to convert any. His first chance saw him blaze over from a Mason Mount cross before he struck the post after being played through on goal by Enzo Fernandez on his debut.

A striker looks set to be on the priority list for the summer with Victor Osimhen and Dusan Vlahovic likely to be on the Blues' wish list. Potter's bold decision to leave Aubameyang out of his team also doesn't appear to have been vindicated with the man deployed in his position not enduring his best display.
