Kai Havertz ends debate over his best position with Chelsea star bemused by three-year question

It is a question Kai Havertz has been asked frequently over the past three seasons – and one the Chelsea star believes he has answered again and again. But let’s try one more time: What is the German’s best position?

“Everyone should know by now what I can do,” Havertz says with a smile and also a hint of exasperation. “I’m flexible up front and I can play a lot of different positions.

“Of course, sometimes it's good to play in different positions and sometimes it's bad. But in general, I'm an offensive player. I like to be in the box, I like to score goals, I like to arrive in the box often and I don't care if I'm there as a No.9 or a No.10. If I'm in the box, I'm there to score goals and that's it.”

Havertz’s latest strike for Chelsea came on Tuesday night against FC Salzburg. It was undoubtedly one of his best. The 23-year-old received a pass from Christian Pulisic on the edge of the penalty area and in one motion controlled the ball and turned. What followed was an unstoppable whipped shot that kissed the crossbar on its way into the net.

The goal was Havertz’s fifth for Chelsea in the Champions League, the competition in which he built his reputation at Stamford Bridge by scoring the winning goal in the 2021 final against Manchester City. “It's a special competition for me personally and for us as a club as well,” admits Havertz.

“For me, it's the best competition in the world and everyone is excited to play in these matches. It was nice to score an important goal (against Salzburg) and I hope to continue in this manner.”
