Iraq's Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi received a phone call from US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, during which he stressed that his country should not become "a stage for settling external scores", his media office said on Twitter late on Sunday.
Earlier in the day, Iran attacked Iraq's northern city of Erbil with a dozen ballistic missiles in an unprecedented assault on the capital of the autonomous Iraqi Kurdish region that appeared to target the United States and its allies.
Iraq's foreign ministry summoned the Iranian ambassador to protest the attack.
