Kacey Musgraves Pays Tribute To John Prine In New Album

Kacey Musgraves

Kacey Musgraves released her latest album on Friday, featuring a touching tribute to her late friend John Prine. The album, titled Deeper Well, includes a song called 'Cardinal,' inspired by Prine, who passed away in April 2020 due to Covid-19 complications.

In a zine accompanying the album, Musgraves shared that the presence of cardinals after Prine's passing led to the creation of the song. Prine believed that cardinals were messengers from the spirit realm, influencing Musgraves' lyrics in 'Cardinal.'

The track's ethereal production and the album's overall aesthetic, described by Musgraves as 'soft nature cottage witch,' complement the heartfelt tribute to Prine.

Musgraves and Prine had a close relationship, with Musgraves crediting Prine for impacting her songwriting significantly. They performed together on several occasions, including on Prine's Cayamo cruise and at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre.

'Cardinal' is not the first song inspired by Prine in Musgraves' discography, as she previously wrote 'Burn One with John Prine' in his honor.

Reflecting on her new album, Musgraves shared that it represents a peaceful phase in her life, emphasizing self-awareness and personal growth in her mid-30s. She expressed the importance of evaluating love, friendships, and priorities, aiming to eliminate obstacles to personal development.

Deeper Well encapsulates Musgraves' introspective journey and her evolution as an artist, resonating with themes of self-discovery and authenticity.
