A unique show combining kabuki and "Star Wars" was presented in Tokyo on Thursday.
"Star Wars Kabuki: Rennosuke Kojin Sanbon" featured characters from the "Star Wars" series, whose names and lines were rendered in kabuki style for the performance.
Against a backdrop of images symbolic to the series, kabuki star Ichikawa Ebizo XI played the lead role, joined by his son, Kangen Horikoshi. Ebizo was also the show's supervisor.
The project was planned with an eye toward the Dec. 20 release of "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker," the final film in the "Star Wars" series.
Ebizo said he is a big fan of the series, adding that the first movie he ever saw at a cinema with his father, the late Ichikawa Danjuro XII, was one of the "Star Wars" films.
As for "Star Wars Kabuki," he said, "It was difficult because we must not let down 'Star Wars' fans while we also had to add kabuki elements to the show."
