Juventus' Aaron Ramsey transfer desperation explained as contract clause emerges

Juventus signed Dusan Vlahovic and Denis Zakaria, but their best bit of business may be Aaron Ramsey's move to Rangers.

The former Arsenal midfielder sealed a Deadline Day loan move to Giovanni van-Bronckhorst’s side, until the end of the season.

Ramsey had only made five appearances for Massimiliano Allegri’s team all season, and was part of a huge fire sale at the Serie A giants, which also saw Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski depart the club for Tottenham.

Rangers pipped the likes of Newcastle United and Everton to his signature, in a move which brought huge excitement to the Scottish giants’ supporters.

However, Juventus could be the club celebrating his exit most, as his move to Scotland has prevented the enacting of various clauses in his contract.

At first, it appeared the Serie A giants’ keenness to shift Ramsey from their squad was motivated by Allegri’s desire to reduce the dead wood in his team.

However, Juventus writer Giacomo Sutiero understands that Ramsey had an automatic renewal clause in his contract, extending his contract to 2024 if he stayed at Juventus until June.

Fortunately for the Italian giants, his move to Rangers means this particular part of his contract cannot come to fruition.

Unless Allegri performs a spectacular U-turn and decides to retain Ramsey at the end of his loan spell, Ramsey will only be part of Juventus until the end of his contract in June 2023.

Juventus will reportedly pay the bulk of his wages during his time at Ibrox, but his move to Rangers will save them money in the long run.

Ramsey won Serie A in his first full season at the club, but a huge number of injuries and the arrivals of stars such as Manuel Locatelli and Arthur Melo has pushed him down the pecking order.

The 71-cap Welsh international reportedly snubbed interest from a number of Premier League clubs to seal his move to the Scottish giants.

“I am really pleased to be joining a club like Rangers, where there is so much to look forward to between now and May,’ he said after completing his move.

“I had a number of offers on the table, but none matched the magnitude of this club, with European football and the chance to play in front of 50,000 fans every other week.

“I have had some fantastic conversations with the manager and Ross Wilson, and I’m really looking forward to working with both of them, and to meeting the supporters.”

Rangers manager Van Bronckhorst also expressed his satisfaction in the Welshman’s arrival.

The Blues are currently leading the Scottish Premiership by two points, but frustrating draws against Ross County and Aberdeen has allowed fierce rivals Celtic to make up some ground.

But the Dutch manager believes Ramsey’s move is the perfect boost.

“I’m absolutely delighted that we have been able to add a player of Aaron’s quality, experience and leadership to our squad,” said the Ibrox boss.

“As soon as it was mooted as a possibility, I was really keen for us to try everything to get the deal done.

“Huge credit must go to Ross and to the board for the work they have put in on this. I look forward to welcoming Aaron to the training centre tomorrow.”
