Justin Fields isn’t winning a lot of games with the Bears yet, but an NFL expert thinks his success is inevitable

Over the last month, there’s probably little doubt that the Chicago Bears’ Justin Fields is the NFL’s hottest quarterback.

Despite working with one of the NFL’s worst offensive supporting cast — especially up front — Fields has seemingly singlehandedly guided Chicago to 124 points. And it’s not like the Bears have played slouches, either. Fields had his way with Bill Belichick’s Patriots’ defense … on the road. Against the Dolphins, who have arguably the NFL’s most explosive and diverse offense, Fields matched almost every haymaker (much to the frustration of Mike McDaniel) with one of his own.

Unfortunately, the Bears have lost their last three games even while Fields has played superhero to try and shift such outcomes. One NFL expert, former quarterback J.T. O’Sullivan, says to see the forest for the trees with Fields. If the Bears’ signal-caller is breaking records and showing off special ability as a runner and passer now — despite his terrible situation and still needing some growth as a player — then the wins will come. And lots of them.

In a podcast appearance on The Athletic’s “Hoge & Jahns,” Sullivan says to be patient with Fields when it comes to team success. Incredibly gifted quarterbacks like him — potential face-of-the-league types — should be destined for greatness in due time.

“It’s already over. You’ve won.”

That is well said and a cogent argument describing a second-year player already dominating while still developing. Through all of Fields’ brilliance, what is becoming increasingly clear is that the Bears have a legitimate star quarterback on their hands.

By the way, it’s worth noting Fields only became one of the NFL’s best rushing quarterbacks out of necessity/survival. He was a pocket passer coming out of college, and that’s on the back burner, just waiting to be unleashed until the Bears prove they can consistently pass block.

Given what Fields is already doing to defenses while still having so much more room to grow; despite a current roster that can’t yet match his special abilities — the sky might truly be the limit for this young man and the Bears’ future.

Lots of problems on this team. QB1 is not one of them. His ascent has been remarkable. He will get the passing figured out. Bears optimism is strange.
