The Justice Department recently reversed a directive that had previously instructed legal service providers to halt their work supporting immigrants. This decision was revealed in a memo that was obtained by sources.
Just last month, legal service providers who receive federal funding and operate within immigration detention facilities were instructed by the Justice Department to cease their activities related to legal orientation, assistance at immigration courts, and counseling for children. This directive was issued in response to one of President Donald Trump's immigration executive orders.
However, this move had severe consequences as it deprived individuals in detention of crucial support in navigating the complex US immigration system.
In a new memo dated February 2, providers were informed to 'immediately resume funding of all programs that received a stop-work order.' Surprisingly, no explanation was provided for this sudden reversal of the previous directive.
