Just Stop Oil block fire engine as man rushing child to hospital begs to be let through

Environmental activists caused a fire engine responding to an emergency to be blocked as another man trying to rush a child to hospital pleaded for them to end their protest.

A quick-thinking ambulance driver was forced to reverse and find another route as the protesters caused chaos in Knightsbridge, London, on Tuesday.

Around 30 people wearing orange high-visibility jackets held up Just Stop Oil banners as they blocked the road in the exclusive area. Some had glued themselves to the road in an attempt to get their voices heard.

It was the 11th consecutive day of demonstrations, which has so far sparked more than 300 arrests.

Since October 1, activists have been blocking a number of roads in the capital with angry drivers seen dragging protesters from the street.

There were angry scenes again yesterday, with arguments captured on camera as tempers reached boiling point.

Annoyed drivers confronted the controversial campaigners, as one man was heard yelling: "I'm trying to get a baby to hospital."

One Westminster City Council binman could also be heard launching a tirade at the group.

He screamed at them: "You've got nothing better to do, get a job, you mugs, come on it's enough, we're just the f***ing workers, you clowns, f***ing idiots, you just sit there like a bunch of lemons."

The Metropolitan Police later confirmed 28 protesters were arrested at the demonstration, all on suspicion of wilful obstruction of the highway

Activist Ailith Stewart, 20, a student from Edinburgh, outlined why he has joined the protest.

"I'm taking action with Just Stop Oil because I'm tired of feeling ignored by the government at Westminster," he said.

"Their decisions don't represent the best interests of the people. There is so much that can be done to mitigate the climate crisis, but this government seems intent on 'ignoring it all and making ordinary people suffer in the name of profit.

"If there's any chance we can show them that the people won't stand for it, I want to take it. There's more of us than there are of them, and we're where their power comes from."
