Just Eat riders to meet police after 'disgraceful' attacks across city

Police will meet with Just Eat riders as part of efforts to better protect them against criminals targeting their bikes.

Delivery riders have been subjected to a series of attacks and thefts across Liverpool over recent months.

Officers are set to attend the Just Eat hub in Vauxhall to discuss “road safety concerns and crime prevention”.

Attacks on takeaway riders, several of which were described by officers as “disgraceful”, have been reported to police either side of Christmas.

In November, a 35-year-old Just Eat rider was punched when three men approached him while he was stopped at traffic lights on Scotland Road.

They stole his electric bike and, when another Just Eat rider challenged them after seeing the vehicle later that night, he was attacked and also had his electric bike taken.

In January, two males approached a Just Eat rider on Jennifer Avenue, just off Scotland Road, attacking him and stealing his electric bike.

Further incidents between those attacks led to Deliveroo riders holding a demonstration across the city just before Christmas.

Days earlier, riders had a Honda motorcycle stolen from outside Subway on Bold Street, Liverpool city centre, and an electric bike stolen on Mill Road in West Derby.

Merseyside Police stepped up efforts to help riders, increasing police patrols in affected areas and using both high visibility, marked police cars, and unmarked vehicles with plain clothed officers, to patrol popular delivery routes.

Efforts to help riders will continue with officers visiting Liverpool’s Just Eat hub on Carruthers Street to discuss safety concerns and share crime prevention advice from 10am to 4pm on Wednesday, March 2.
