Jurrien Timber's previous comments regarding Manchester City have proven why it is currently a struggle for the Reds to land the 20-year-old defender.
Timber became a pivotal part of Ten Hag's side last season as Ajax lifted the Eredivisie title. The Dutchman made 43 appearances for the Amsterdam club and MEN Sport understands that he is a key target for United this summer.
Reports have suggested though that United may struggle to land their man due to his reluctance to potentially sacrifice regular first-team football in a World Cup year. However there could be more than just that which could prevent the Reds sealing the deal.

Speaking back in March to Helden Magazine via Sports Mole about the possibility of leaving Ajax, Timber explained his ambitions. "I like to play for prizes, that's why I say (Manchester) City (over Barcelona) now," he explained.
"Barcelona has a less good period at the moment. I want to grow as a player, use my time at Ajax to become even better.
"At Ajax, you have to be happy if you are in the starting lineup, that's why I want to enjoy this time consciously. I play for the prizes here, there is no better place to be.
"Ajax was always my dream club. I also slept under an Ajax duvet.
"I plan to stay here for a while. But if Manchester City calls, what should I do?"
These comments will concern Ten Hag who not only has to persuade Timber to leave a club that he has a deep affiliation with, he also needs to show him that United are a club that can win the big titles. Having finished sixth last season, the Reds have a huge uphill task to be challenging for silverware next season as Ten Hag aims to rebuild the club.
