Jurgen Klopp to receive Freedom of the City from Liverpool Council in special ceremony

Jurgen Klopp is reportedly set to be rewarded the Freedom of the City of Liverpool as reward for his fantastic work with the Reds.

The German has transformed the fortunes of the Anfield outfit since his arrival on Merseyside just under seven years ago. Having endured a poor start to the campaign, the Reds elected to jettison Brendan Rodgers in favour of the German schemer.

Since then, he has built a formidable team at Liverpool and led the club to their first ever Premier League crown, a sixth Champions League title, as well as a whole host of other trophies.

That work is set to be rewarded with a special honour next week according to the Liverpool Echo. In an extraordinary session, Liverpool City Council is recommended to award honorary Freedom of the City status to Klopp alongside TV legend Sue Johnstone.

His receipt of the status makes him just the latest in an ever-growing list of Reds icons to be handed the honour. Former players Steven Gerrard and Kenny Dalglish have also been bestowed with the Freedom of the City having enjoyed lengthy careers with the club - the latter having also managed the side over two spells.

Councillors will have to agree to the recommendation but that is expected to be a formality with Klopp anticipated to receive the Freedom Scroll at a civic function hosted by the Lord Mayor, Cllr Roy Gladden.

Ever since arriving at Anfield, Klopp has overseen 379 matches at Anfield, winning 238 of those. Only the domestic dominance has stopped the former Borussia Dortmund man from claiming more Premier League winners’ medals - two of the club’s 90+ point seasons having gone unrewarded.

There was recently doubt over the German’s long-term future at Liverpool with his previous deal having only two seasons remaining. However, he penned a fresh two-year contract that is now set to expire in the summer of 2026. Upon agreeing an extended stay, Klopp reiterated his desire to keep evolving the side, whilst also continuing to challenge both on the domestic and European front.

Speaking to Liverpool’s official website, he said: “We are a club that is constantly moving in the right direction. We have a clear idea of what we want; we have a clear idea of how we try to achieve it. That’s always a great position to start from.

“When the owners brought the possibility to renew to me, I asked myself the question I’ve mused over publicly. Do I have the energy and vibe to give of myself again what this amazing place requires from the person in the manager’s office?

“I didn’t need too long to answer in truth. The answer was very simple… I’m in love with here and I feel fine!”
