Jurgen Klopp sent message by young defender amid Liverpool injury crisis

Liverpool Under-21s suffered a defeat in the Premier League International Cup clash against Hertha Berlin.

The young Reds hosted the German club at Kirkby on Wednesday night, but succumbed to a 3-2 defeat. Calvin Ramsay scored Liverpool’s first goal of the contest, as he continued to gain match sharpness.

Barry Lewtas’ side trailed in the 17th minute with a goal from Lukas Ullrich. Things got worse on the half-hour mark, when Ibrahim Maza put Hertha 2-0 up.

But Liverpool soon responded, with Ramsay meeting a Max Woltman cross to narrow the deficit. It was his third goal since moving from Aberdeen in the summer.

Liverpool were then dealt an injury blow late on in the first half, with Oakley Cannonier picking up a knock. The young striker was replaced by Harvey Blair shortly before the interval.

Shortly after the restart, Liverpool conceded a third goal. Maza secured his brace with a finish that beat Reds goalkeeper Harvey Davies.

There was to be more drama, as Mateusz Musialowski scored to make it 3-2 to Hertha. A trademark run from the 19-year-old was rounded off with a tidy finish to give Liverpool hope of a comeback.

Despite an impressive effort to get on level terms, Liverpool could not score an equaliser and instead fell to a defeat. Liverpool now lie in second place in Group C in the PL International Cup, but have played two games more than third placed Crystal Palace.

Liverpool Under-21s line-up: Davies; Ramsay (Jonas, sub), R. Williams, Koumetio, Beck; Corness, Stephenson, Frauendorf (Olufunwa, sub), Musialowski, Woltman, Cannonier (Blair, sub).

Subs: Hughes, Spearing.
