Jurgen Klopp sends Anfield warning as Liverpool close the gap to Newcastle United

Jurgen Klopp believes Anfield 'proved a point' as Liverpool closed the gap to Newcastle United in the race to qualify for next season's Champions League. The Reds bounced back from a heavy first-leg defeat to Real Madrid in their last home outing to beat Wolves on Wednesday night.

Late strikes from Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah sealed a 2-0 win over the relegation battlers, and means Liverpool are now just two points behind Newcastle. Both sides still trail fourth-placed Tottenham, although Antonio Conte's side have played two games more than the Magpies.

The Reds are the only team to defeat Newcastle in the Premier League this term, following up their controversial victory at Anfield in August with a 2-0 win at St James' Park last month. Liverpool host old rivals Manchester United in their next outing on Sunday, and Klopp has urged the home crowd to prove the club are a 'proper unit' once again.

Firstly asked about van Dijk's performance, Klopp told the Liverpool Echo: “We all need that and he needs that as well. It’s obviously a really good one in a tough game for defenders. I thought we performed tonight, we played a really good game in general.

“I really think the centre-halves and Fabinho together, how they covered that area, how they denied the counter-attacks, how they defended into midfield, which is very important against a team which plays with one striker, I thought they did really well. In possession, we looked pretty good in a lot of moments, with Harvey and Stefan in the half-spaces. It worked well.

“I think Anfield proved a point tonight again. It was super, super enjoyable. It felt like a proper unit, we all together. I love that and it’s what we need again on Sunday.”
