When Jurgen Klopp selected a team to face Tottenham Hotspur on October 17, 2015 little would he know that James Milner would be the only surviving Liverpool player heading into the 2022/23 season.
But with the imminent departure of Divock Origi, that is exactly the situation Klopp's 'Mr Reliable' finds himself in, after agreeing a new one-year that will keep the 36-year-old Yorkshireman at Anfield for an eighth season. The Reds played out a goalless draw at White Hart Lane in that first match, but have since gone on, with Milner, to win practically every major trophy on offer to them, including a first league title in 30 years and a sixth European Cup.
But while veteran Milner rests up ahead of another silverware-chasing campaign under Klopp, what became of his teammates from that first match against Spurs? Here we take a loot at where there are now.

Simon Mignolet
Belgian 'keeper Mignolet made over 200 appearances for Liverpool but lost his place after five games of the 206/17 season to new signing Loris Karius. He did eventually return to the first team as Karius' form dipped but the arrival of Alisson Becker in 2018 pushed his game time down to domestic cup matches only. He eventually left for Belgian side FC Brugge in the Summer of 2019 for a reported £6.5million fee and has remained there to this day.
Nathaniel Clyne
Right-back Clyne was a regular starter for Liverpool until he sustained a serious back injury prior to the 2017/18 season. On his return an anterior cruciate ligament injury wiped out another entire campaign and he was allowed to leave at the end his contract in June 2020. He has since re-joined former club Crystal Palace.
Martin Skrtel
Despite scoring seven own goals in a Liverpool shirt, Skrtel was a popular figure who made over 300 appearances at centre-back for the Reds and even captained them against Real Madrid in the Spanish capital. He left for Fenerbahce in July 2016 and then joined Atalanta for just three week before his contract was terminated as he failed to settle. Skrtel now turns out for Spartak Trnanva in his native Slovakia.
Mamadou Sakho
Sakho was infamously sent home early from Liverpool's pre-season tour of the United States by Klopp for not not respecting the rules that had been put in place for the squad. He was demoted to playing in reserve team matches in the Professional Development League. Sakho joined Palace on loan in January 2017 before the deal was made permanent seven months later. He is now back in France turning out for Montpellier.
Alberto Moreno
Left-back Moreno came under criticism during the 2017/18 season and although he was defended by Klopp, eventually lost his place to new signing Andy Robertson. He won a Champions League medal with the Reds in 2019 before joining Villarreal, with whom he would win the Europa League against Manchester United in 2021.
Lucas Leiva
The popular Brazilian took his time to win over the Anfield faithful but went on to play for the Reds for 10 seasons, making 346 appearances. He joined Lazio in 2017 and has made almost 200 appearances for the Italian club, winning Player of the Year in the 2017/18 season.
Emre Can
German international Can was a regular starter under Klopp and is best remembered for scoring an outrageous overhead kick against Watford in 2016 that won two goal of the season awards. But after allowing his contract to run down, Can left Merseyside for Juventus in the summer of 2018. He is now at Borussia Dortmund.
Adam Lallana
Midfielder Lallana's finest moment in a Liverpool shirt arrived when he scored the winning goal deep into injury time in an incredible 5-4 victory against Norwich City in January 2016. But he appeared injury-prone and struggled to hold down a regular first team place. The ex-Southampton man collected a Champions League winners medal in 2019 despite sitting on the bench for the final and then left Anfield with a Premier League medal 12 months later. Now plies his trade for Brighton & Hove Albion.
Philippe Coutinho
The creative Brazilian was one of the Liverpool's most important players when Klopp arrived and nearly helped the Reds to end their long wait for a Premier League title under previous manager Brendan Rodgers. But after six seasons at Anfield, Barcelona came calling in 2018 and when the two clubs agreed a fee of £142million for his transfer, he became Liverpool's all-time record sale. His time at Barca was an unhappy one however and after spending time on loan with Bayern Munich he has since returned to the Premier League under the management of former teammate Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa.
Divock Origi
Cult hero Origi was never able to hold down a regular place in the starting XI for the Reds over a seven season spell, but his knack for a big goal has ensured that his name is now etched in the history of the club. Significant goals included a bizarre last minute winner against Everton, two goals against Barcelona in a 4-0 Champions League semi-final win that overturned a 3-0 first leg deficit and a goal in the final itself against Tottenham in 2019. Origi leaves Liverpool at the end this month and is expected to join AC Milan.
