Jurgen Klopp rejects Man City claim as Liverpool Diego Jota replacement clear

Your morning Liverpool headlines for Wednesday, October 19

'I would hate myself' - Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp rejects Man City 'xenophobe' reports

Jurgen Klopp insists he does not feel hurt by accusations of xenophobia following his comments around Manchester City's spending power last week.

Liverpool beat City 1-0 at Anfield on Sunday in a tempestuous game that was marred by a handful of incidents involving both sets of supporters off the pitch. Anfield officials were forced to release two statements around the "vile chants" from City fans relating to the Hillsborough and Heysel tragedies and alleged coin throwing at Pep Guardiola from the home end.

On Monday, City also alleged their team bus was attacked on its way back to Manchester but have yet to release a statement on any of the flare-ups throughout the day. Merseyside Police said that no reports have been filed yet with regards to the alleged vandalism of the bus.

Despite the ongoing animosity from both sets of supporters, it was Klopp's pre-match press conference on Friday that has seemingly angered those at the Etihad the most. Speaking before the game, Klopp suggested that "nobody can compete" with Pep Guardiola's side when it comes to investing in their squad during the transfer window and the comments were viewed dimly by senior figures at City.

Jurgen Klopp must replace Diogo Jota with unexpected Liverpool star after astonishing 10-goal run

When it rains, it pours. The injury bug has certainly hit Liverpool hard this season with the Reds losing a number of new players to long-term setbacks in the last few weeks just as their previously walking wounded closed in on returns.

Arthur Melo was the first unfortunate star after suffering a thigh injury in training which ruled him out for four months. This was followed by Luis Diaz suffering a knee injury against Arsenal that will keep him out until 2023, and then Diogo Jota being ruled out of the World Cup with a serious calf injury that will sideline long-term, having been stretchered off against Man City.

Throw in lesser serious injuries suffered by the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate and it's enough for Jurgen Klopp to start pulling his hair out, wondering what on earth he did wrong in a previous life. At least the returns of Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara, alongside Curtis Jones, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita's recent involvement in training means, even with Arthur's setback, Liverpool's midfield injury woes have eased up considerably.

Yet, now the German has cause for concern elsewhere after losing both Diaz and Jota to long-term injury, with the Reds' attacking quota increasingly threadbare. Last season, Klopp boasted seven senior international forwards in his ranks for the second half of the season following Diaz’s January arrival, ensuring he could comfortably navigate such issues.
