Jurgen Klopp praised for gesture to Scott Parker during 9-0 thrashing - "touch of class"

Jermaine Jenas has applauded Jurgen Klopp for comforting Scott Parker during Liverpool's 9-0 victory against Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon.

The Reds produced a record-equalling win at Anfield thanks to goals from Harvey Elliott, Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Fabio Carvalho. Luis Diaz and Roberto Firmino both scored braces, while Cherries defender Chris Mepham found his own net.

Parker was clearly devastated after the emphatic result was confirmed, but Klopp was on hand to show some support. "I thought that element from Jurgen Klopp was a touch of class, to be honest with you," claimed Jenas on Saturday's Match of the Day.

"He’ll have been in that situation himself as a young manager and will understand what Scott Parker’s going through."

Speaking after the game, Parker admitted: "It goes without saying it is a really humbling experience. I am pretty shell-shocked. I am not that surprised given the level here is far greater than we have. I am not making an excuse, some of the goals were our own doing.

"I feel sorry for the fans. I feel sorry for the players because we are ill-equipped at this level. This does not shine a light for me. There are players who are experiencing the Premier League for the first time. I never thought we could get beat 9-0 but I expected a real challenge at certain moments in certain games.

"This is the toughest day, as a player and certainly as a coach. The touchline today was pretty painful and I could sense it was painful for the players as well. They need some help. Liverpool were ruthless and my boys were flat to the floor, searching for oxygen at times and trying to breathe."

Speaking after the win, Klopp revealed that he didn't want his players to take their foot off the gas out of respect for Bournemouth. Liverpool were 5-0 up at half-time and could have sat back, yet they went all out in pursuit of a record victory.

"The game settled and we kept scoring," said Klopp. "It was about keep going. Not to humiliate Bournemouth, we couldn’t respect them more. It’s about putting the opponent under pressure. I could bring on the kids, they deserve it so much."

Bournemouth didn't cover themselves in glory at Anfield as Liverpool scored goals with ease. Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin believes Klopp's side could've reached double figures. "You sometimes take the brilliance for granted, it was sheer torture for Bournemouth," Nevin told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"Carvalho would walk into any position in the forward line and look at home. He is that good. Nine goals and it could have been 12, 13 14, that is not an exaggeration. Everything went perfectly and Bournemouth will hope they never have another day like this."

Bournemouth will need to recover quickly as they host Wolves in their next Premier League fixture on Wednesday evening. Liverpool, meanwhile, welcome Newcastle to Anfield.
