Jurgen Klopp opens up on Liverpool summer transfer plan and John Henry talks

Jurgen Klopp has warned that he will not be making wholesale changes to his Liverpool squad this summer, citing Chelsea as an example of how accelerated rebuilds can go wrong in the transfer market.

And the Reds manager has intimated that his meeting with club owner John W Henry this week was not to specifically outline his budgetary demands ahead of what is being viewed as a critical window at Anfield.

Liverpool took the decision to step away from the £130m-rated Jude Bellingham at Borussia Dortmund recently in favour of spreading their transfer kitty across more areas and Klopp and his recruitment department are continuing to run the rule over several central midfielders.

Klopp met with Fenway Sports Group chief Henry in a London hotel on Tuesday ahead of their 2-1 win over West Ham United on Wednesday evening and the manager said that while recruitment is a must later this year, he steered clear of suggesting that it will be a large scale restructuring to the makeup of his squad as he used 12th-place Chelsea's incredible £500m outlay across their two transfer windows under new owner Todd Boehly as an example for how it does not automatically lead to success.

"[The meeting with Henry] was good, he is a good guy," Klopp told Sky Sports ahead of Sunday's visit from Tottenham. "I find it really funny what the expectations are on a talk like this that I sit there and put my ideas on the table and John says: 'How much is this? How much is that?' It is not like this.

"We have a really good relationship and he is a really good guy who cares a lot about us and we will do business. I don't understand, football is crazy - it was always crazy - but everybody expects 'OK Liverpool is not doing well, so they need five, six or seven players bringing in'.

"I feel a little bit for Chelsea to be honest, because it’s not going well, I think they’re a top, top team, but on the other side it's good to see that you cannot just bring top players together and think it works out.

"You have to build a team and that’s what the guys there underestimated and gave their coaches a nearly impossible job to do.

"You cannot have two dressing rooms, you cannot train on two pitches, you have to create relationships, you have to create team spirit, and that’s the only reason why I’m a little bit happy about it."

Klopp added: "Chelsea will be fine in the end and they will be incredibly strong next year, but I’m using them just as an example. At the highest level, no, we cannot do it like that. And that’s what we will not do.

"You have to bring in the right players and build a new team. This team wrote a sensational story and now we start a new one, that’s it. How many players? We will see. We will see."
