Jurgen Klopp has been nominated in the 2022 British LGBT Awards for the Ally of the Year accolade.

The Liverpool manager is nominated alongside Formula 1 superstar Lewis Hamilton, actor Daniel Radcliffe and Little Mix icon Jade Thirlwall for the coveted title, which was previously won by Melanie C.

The awards, in association with headline sponsors Macquarie and Tesco, celebrate leading LGBT+ activists, allies and celebrity figures who have worked to advance the rights of the community during the past 12 months.

The 54-year-old’s nomination was announced today ahead of the annual ceremony which is set to take place in London on Friday, June 24.

Klopp is a major supporter of the LGBT+ community, having backed Rainbow Laces while also sitting down with Liverpool supporters group Kop Outs in August 2021 to discuss the issue of fans singing homophobic chants after Norwich City's game with Liverpool was marred by chants directed at Billy Gilmour.

The biggest LGBT+ event in Britain’s red-carpet calendar also sees Liverpool FC’s Red Together campaign nominated for its brand or marketing campaign award.

It will compete against the likes of LEGO’s Everyone Is Awesome set and Levi’s All Pronouns All Love campaign.

Founder of the British LGBT Awards, Sarah Garrett, said: "These awards shine a light on those who have stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the LGBT+ community, during what has been another very challenging 12 months for the community.

"The nominees, which include an exciting mix of famous LGBT+ faces, allies and organisations have all demonstrated a commitment to advancing LGBT+ rights. The awards on 24 June will be a huge celebration of our culture."

Lady Gaga, Alan Carr, Steps and Olly Alexander are amongst the other big names who are in with the chance of winning an award.

BBC’s poignant documentary Freddie Mercury: The Final Act has been shortlisted for the Media Moment prize.

The acclaimed programme, starring Queen's own Brian May and Roger Taylor, powerfully told the story of Freddie Mercury’s life and how after his death, Queen staged one of the biggest concerts in history to challenge the prejudices around HIV.

Josh Cavallo, the first top-flight footballer to come out as gay, the first same-sex male partnership featuring Johannes Radebe and John Waite on Strictly Come Dancing and Victoria Scone making history on Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK by becoming the first assigned female at birth (AFAB) queen to star on the show are also nominated in the same category. which was won by It’s a Sin last year.

Rachel Palmer, LGBTQ+ executive sponsor at British LGBT Awards sponsors Macquarie Group, said: "We’re proud to be the headline sponsor of this year’s British LGBT Awards. Our purpose is to empower people to innovate and invest for a better future and the British LGBT Awards celebrate those who are doing just that."
