Jurgen Klopp must make Jordan Henderson decision as Liverpool face up to transfer reality

A big worry for Liverpool during Saturday's defeat at Anfield was the lack of options for Jurgen Klopp to change the game.

Under normal circumstances, you could put [Luis] Diaz on, [Diogo] Jota on or [Roberto] Firmino but we had not one person, other than Jordan Henderson, who could make a real difference from an attacking sense. That’s a big problem.

Although Jordan was introduced for the final 30 minutes against Leeds United, he should be starting for Liverpool at this moment in time. You need leaders on the pitch, and he is one of them. I’m pretty sure the reason he is being left out must be to try and keep him away from injury. He must have an underlying problem because he should be on the teamsheet every game.

Henderson is the main talker in the team and we are crying out for a bit of leadership on the pitch presently. I can’t believe he’s got his critics, he has been unbelievable for me since being at the club. With the position we’re in, he’s got to have the role of getting the team back firing.

I still think we need an injection of young blood in midfield, a really top player. There’s talk of Bellingham and Declan Rice and I’m not saying we have to get them, but we have to be in the mix to get them in January. If we fail to make a signing of quality in that area, we could well end up in the Europa League or, even worse, the Conference League the way things are going. Players will not come to the club next summer if we’re not in the Champions League and let’s hope that can be put right.

A lot being asked of Elliott but he has coped well

One player who has been starting near enough every game this season is Harvey Elliott, despite only being 19 years old.

Everyone likes Elliott and he is going to be a great player, I’m pretty sure of it. He is desperate to do well but he’s only a baby in footballing terms so he is going to have dips in certain games. There is a lot of pressure on him to perform, but we know how he’s viewed by the staff as he’s being picked on a consistent basis. He has been super for us and hopefully he will continue to be for the coming years.
