Jurgen Klopp might have lost his Liverpool maestro and Naby Keita could be deciding factor

Every team in the Premier League rounded up their 2021/22 campaign on Sunday afternoon. Every team except for Liverpool, that is.

The Reds still have one match remaining on their packed calendar. On Saturday night, Jurgen Klopp's men will clash with Real Madrid to determine the winners of this season's Champions League, but they seem likely to do so without Thiago Alcantara.

The Spaniard was forced to leave the field against Wolves on Sunday afternoon. As Liverpool attempted to snatch the Premier League title from the hands of Manchester City, Thiago seemed to pick up an injury in the 45th minute after attempting a long-range pass.

The ECHO reported on Monday that Liverpool will give Thiago every opportunity to prove his fitness for the final - intensive treatment at the AXA Training Centre is planned before a decision is made - but Klopp may well be forced to face Madrid without his conductor.

Thiago has been essential to Liverpool's game this season. When he's on the pitch, the Reds have appeared like a different team.

The two-time Champions League winner has started 25 matches in all competitions this term, losing just once. That loss came in the second leg of a knockout tie against Inter Milan, after Liverpool had won the first leg by two goals to nil. Thiago played just 65 minutes on the day and Klopp's outfit didn't necessarily have to secure a win in order to progress into the next round.

Liverpool have scored 62 goals in the 25 matches that Thiago has started this season, equating to around 2.5 goals per match. On the defensive side of the game, they have conceded just 13, and four of those were scored by Pep Guardiola's City team.

He's Klopp's maestro. The 31 year-old is a natural in possession, showcasing an innate ability to keep the ball while also moving it forward into decisive areas.

He found a teammate with around 89.6% of his passes in the Premier League this season, placing him behind only five other midfielders in England's top-flight.

Crucially, alongside his ball retention, Thiago placed top of the division for progressive passes per 90. He amassed a total of 175 progressive passes over the course of the season, which was just four fewer than Rodri who spent almost twice as many minutes on the pitch as the Liverpool fulcrum.

Ahead of a meeting with the likes of Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Casemiro in Paris, Klopp will likely have to find a way of competing without his star midfielder, with Naby Keita appearing the most likely to take his place.

The Guinean international has been a more prominent figure on Merseyside this season, although memories of his last performance against Madrid will surely linger after Keita was substituted - for Thiago - after just 42 minutes of football in the Spanish capital last season.

Keita could have a high-profile opportunity to showcase his true level this weekend. His rematch with Madrid could wind up deciding whether Liverpool add a seventh Champions League crown to their busy trophy cabinet.
