Jurgen Klopp is hopeful for better fortune with injuries during the second half of the season as he confirmed Liverpool are “open” to reinforcements in January.

The Reds signed off ahead of the forthcoming World Cup with a 3-1 Premier League victory over Southampton at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

Klopp has seen 20 different players miss at least one game this campaign through injury, with Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz the current long-term absentees.

And asked if Liverpool would benefit from greater luck with injuries, Klopp said: “It would be absolutely helpful. We had pretty much all of them already (injured), so who would have thought two strikers would be out long term? How can we prepare for that? It is not really possible."

Michael Owen and Steve McManaman have both backed Darwin Nunez to maintain his impressive form after the forward's two goals in Liverpool's 3-1 victory against Southampton.

Nunez has come under criticism from rival supporters since making his summer move from Benfica, not helped by a foolish red card received in his first game at Anfield versus Crystal Palace back in August.

Since returning to the starting XI, the 23-year-old has proved his doubters wrong and is beginning to justify why the Reds agreed a package deal worth £85m to bring the Uruguayan to Merseyside.

With five goals in his last seven outings - and a total of nine strikes in all competitions - Owen is of the view the towering striker is certainly living up to his lofty expectations.
