Jurgen Klopp makes Premier League title promise after Liverpool overcome Leicester

Jurgen Klopp has vowed his Liverpool side will fight to the finish in the title race.

And even though he admits that Manchester City aren’t yet “smelling our breath” on the back of their necks, he believes his impressive side will never give up.

"I don't think they smell our breath already! But we just try to win football matches - this is a massive club and every we put our shirts on, we have to win it," he said.

“I am not sure we are in a position to put them on their toes. But even if we have no chance to catch them, we have to win our games. We showed that against Leicester - we showed we are not allowed to take anything for granted.”

Liverpool closed the gap a little at the top of the table with a deserved victory over Leicester, with Diogo Jota again the match winner as he took his tally for the season to 17.

He scored the opening goal - for the 10th time this season - just as the visitors were threatening to frustrated the Reds for the second time this season.

And Klopp said he has kept them in the title race in the AFCON absence of Mo Salah and Sadio Mane. “He is obviously in a goalscoring moment which makes it incredibly helpful and in the absence of Mo and Sadio it is extremely helpful.

“We knew he was good, but now we have no idea where his limit is or where he can go and I'm not sure he is already there. If you speak to him you realise he is a really smart person.”

Klopp also had special praise for new signing Luis Diaz, who made his Premier League debut. When it was mentioned he looks like a true Liverpool player he replied:

““That's exactly the impression he made in training so that's why we thought 'Come on, let's give it a try'. He seems to be a smart footballer who has watched us quite a lot, and he looks like a Liverpool player. He enjoyed the game.”

Leicester were defeated again, but after criticising his side for the Cup defeat at the weekend, manager Brendan Rodgers said: “I told them we restored the pride in our performance.

"Sometimes you have to be harsh to be clear and that was my thoughts at the weekend, it was nowhere near the level and especially in a derby game, it was a tough couple of days for us and coming here v a top opponent was going to be a stiff challenge.

“We dug in to stay in the game and we could have got something. They showed a great attitude.”
