Jurgen Klopp makes Liverpool midfield signing admission as transfer deadline day arrives

Jurgen Klopp has said he “doesn’t think” Liverpool will be adding to their ranks on transfer deadline day this Thursday.

Liverpool scrapped to a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United on Wednesday evening and with the Reds crying out for some impetus and creativity from the bench early in the second-half, Klopp was left to bring on James Milner, Kostas Tsimikas and Fabio Carvalho in search of an elusive winner.

Of course, that goal did come from Carvalho with a winning strike deep into stoppage time to shatter Geordie hearts, but on another evening it could have been a familiar story for those leaving Anfield frustrated with the manager’s options in reserve.

There is obviously a huge caveat to the Reds’ current lack of options from the bench, signalled by 17-year-old duo Stefan Bajcetic and Boby Clark making the match day squads in recent weeks, and Klopp forced to deal with a plethora of injuries in the opening weeks of the season.

Despite links to Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans, Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Ruben Neves and RB Leipzig’s Konrad Laimer, the Liverpool manager doesn’t believe there will be any incomings to the Liverpool squad over the next 24 hours.

“I don’t think so,” said the German when quizzed about potential deadline incomings. “But as long as there is time we should not close the door completely. Obviously, Hendo is injured, he got a hamstring injury, which is absolutely not helpful. But I don’t think so.”

There was an element of positivity prior to kick-off for Reds supporters as Klopp was able to welcome back Curtis Jones and Joel Matip to his squad for the first time in weeks, while Diogo Jota is due to return to training on Thursday morning after overcoming the hamstring injury he suffered earlier this summer.

Thiago Alcantara and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will then remain as the Reds’ long-term absentees with the former still nursing the hamstring injury he picked up against Fulham on the opening day of the season, while Oxlade-Chamberlain is not expected to be back in action until late October after his latest setback during the pre-season tour of Thailand.
