Jurgen Klopp makes defiant Trent Alexander-Arnold claim after Liverpool win at Arsenal

Jurgen Klopp hailed his Liverpool defence after they brought up their 17th clean sheet of the Premier League season with a 2-0 win at Arsenal.

Goals from Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino in the second half were enough to take the Reds to just a point behind league leaders Manchester City at the Emirates.

Klopp was full of praise for his defenders, however, as he hit out at suggestions that Trent Alexander-Arnold cannot defend adequately as they secured a fourth successive clean sheet against Arsenal.

LFC VERDICT: Jurgen Klopp decision proves Gary Neville right as Liverpool make title statement to Man City

"It's a clear agreement from us. We had to really readjust it in early January really," he said.

"We have to agree, we have to, that it is defence first because otherwise you are some team, any team or whatever where you win some or you lose some. And today we won 2-0 but we have games where we have won 1-0 and we wouldn't have won these games if we were not spot on.

"Today, it was incredible. Ali saved us again but what the two full-backs did was insane. I've said it already before but if there are one or two things [claiming] Trent cannot defend, then I am sorry, you have no idea about football.

"And everyone who says that is just madness. To play against Martinelli, what Henderson did like run 50 times...in the second half we defended better and the only option they had was to play the long diagonal to Martinelli.

"So they constantly had these one versus one situations and it was absolutely these situations where we were the winner today. Yes, we needed to score goals and we defended them in these situations, that was essential."

On Firmino's goal to make it 2-0, Klopp added: "It was a top goal and Andy Robertson really waited. He obviously didn't play it at the first opportunity, he obviously waited and when it went in the box we found two or three players in a proper position.

"I think it was Bobby (Firmino) who got a foot on the ball and that is the shambles of my position. I saw it once and I didn't even know who scored. I saw the yellow card for Bobby and I thought he would probably not take the shirt off if Hendo scores. So I will watch it back."
