Jurgen Klopp makes claim about Leeds United style that meant no surprises for Matip goal

A jubilant Jurgen Klopp praised his Liverpool stars after they thrashed Leeds 6-0 to move three points behind league leaders Man City.

Three goals either side of half-time succumbed the Whites to another embarrassing defeat on the road as the pressure cranks up on Marcelo Bielsa.

The Argentine received criticism before the game for leaving Joe Gelhardt on the bench, despite calls from supporters to start the youngster after an impressive cameo against Man Utd.

The 19-year-old striker would unlikely have had much of an impact as a rampant Reds demolished Leeds from the offset to heighten relegation fears around Elland Road.

Defeat leaves the Whites just three points above the drop zone having played two games more than Burnley - who are 18th.

Klopp was happy to see Liverpool nullify the Whites’ ability to stage an epic comeback, with the visitors managing just three shots all game.

"Leeds are famous for big comebacks, so they had their moments,” he told Liverpool Echo post-match.

“We controlled the game pretty well though I have to say. Longer the game went the better we used the pitch."

The Reds boss was surprised to see Joel Matip charge through on goal to score Liverpool’s second, but admitted that this is possible when playing against an ultra-attacking side like Leeds.

He added: "Against Leeds it's possible (for a centre-back to score) and against Leeds it's needed as well."
