Jurgen Klopp issues Nottingham Forest challenge to Liverpool after Leeds United thrashing

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has challenged his squad to "build on" a big win over Leeds United, starting against Nottingham Forest this weekend.

Liverpool came out 6-1 winners at Elland Road, with four goals in the second half making it a comfortable evening for Klopp’s side. Cody Gakpo, Mo Salah (x2), Diogo Jota (x2) and Darwin Nunez were all on the scoresheet in a result that may have done Forest a favour in the race for Premier League survival.

But Steve Cooper’s men now travel to Anfield to take on a Liverpool side full of confidence. The win was the side’s first in five in all competitions, although they did come back from 2-0 down to draw with Arsenal last weekend.

Forest meanwhile will be looking to end a 10-game run without a win in the Premier League in order to climb out of the Premier League relegation zone.

Speaking following the win over Leeds, Klopp issued the challenge to his players ahead of the visit of Forest, after what he describes as a ‘really bad season’ for his team.

“The challenge now is to build on this," Klopp said, via the Liverpool Echo. "I don’t know where it will lead to. It’s super important what happens from now on because if it goes on, there will be a next season.

"I have no clue where we will end up this season, it depends massively on other teams around us who can win all their games. We can’t do much about that.

“But what’s important now is what we showed in the second half against Arsenal. That could have gone either way but we reacted well and got the point which we deserved at least and tonight, super important that we really understand what we got here.

“We played a really bad season but some things are not really to explain and some definitely are and are not acceptable. We have to understand what is possible. I just want us to play top football and win games and we will see where we end up."

Liverpool currently sit in eighth place in the Premier League nine points adrift of fourth placed Newcastle United in the race for Champions League football next season.
