Jurgen Klopp issues clear response to Mohamed Salah's blunt Liverpool formation comment

Jurgen Klopp insists that he may keep changing Liverpool's formation despite Mohamed Salah's claim that he finds it "easier" in their well-established 4-3-3 setup.

Liverpool reverted to that system for Tuesday's Champions League clash at home to Napoli, having previously experimented with a couple of variations of a 4-4-2 - one that at times placed four players in attack, and one that included a midfield diamond.

Prior to that Klopp had almost exclusively stuck to the 4-3-3 system throughout his time on Merseyside, but after a poor start to this season he said that he needed to "reinvent" his side in wake of a 4-1 Champions League defeat to Napoli in September.

Salah scored the opener in Tuesday's 2-0 win over the same opponents, and when asked about the shift in formations by BT Sport post-match he admitted that he preferred being back in his usual position on the right of the three in attack.

“It’s not my job, it’s the gaffer’s job,” he replied when asked if 4-3-3 makes things easier for him, adding that he did feel more comfortable playing within it.

“Any position makes me comfortable. I’m happy about it. I’ve played the position for five or six years, so I have to say yes that position is the best for me.

"But I’m not the manager – the manager decides the tactics and as a player you have to follow the leader."

Curtis Jones played on the left of the attack against Napoli, before he was replaced by summer signing Darwin Nunez who had a hand in both goals, scoring the second.

Attempts to integrate Nunez into the team have been seen by many as one of the reasons for the shape shifting, but the Uruguayan is able to play on the left side of a front three - a position that was occupied by Sadio Mane for many years - and also in the centre.

With Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota both injured Klopp has lost two of his primary options to play on the left, although Jones, Fabio Carvalho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita have played there in the past, as well as Nunez.

The Reds boss spoke of making his team more "unpredictable" going into this season having been frustrated with their performance in May's Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.

He insists that while 4-3-3 is his most used formation, it doesn't have to be one that Liverpool play all the time.

“It’s the system we played most often, it’s the system which is familiar to us when we played well and we can defend better in that system,” he said after the Napoli game.

“We didn’t do that (defend) that often when we played it recently, that’s why we had to change a couple of things – to give the boys a few new things to think about, a few new pieces of information and all these kind of things.

“It was always on the table for us; it doesn’t mean we will play it from now on all the time.

“No decision made. We will see what we will do against Tottenham (on Sunday) but it was never off the table this system, it was just that we had to change a little bit to give ourselves a new impulse and to feel the defending stuff again in a new way.

"That’s sometimes how it works.”
