Jurgen Klopp involved in heated altercation with Villarreal star as Adrian intervenes

Jurgen Klopp was involved in a heated altercation with Villarreal defender Juan Foyth after Liverpool's Champions League victory on Wednesday evening.

Klopp's side will take a 2-0 lead to Spain for the second leg of their semi-final after an own goal and a Sadio Mane strike. If Liverpool reach the showpiece event in Paris, it will be their fourth major European final since the German was appointed in October 2015.

Shortly after the game, Klopp was seen briefly arguing with Foyth. Reserve goalkeeper Adrian was forced to intervene and reason with the former Tottenham defender, who made 12 Premier League appearances during his time in England.

Although Liverpool have a nice lead, they will be expecting a battle from Villarreal in Spain. The La Liga outfit are coached by former Arsenal manager Unai Emery, a European specialist who's won the Europa League four times.

"We have to recognise that we are playing a semi-final of the Champions League against a tough team like Villarreal and have to have the space to be ourselves, that's the key," said Thiago at full-time. "I really enjoyed the team performance, that for me is the best thing, because we put our level as high as possible and we delivered today.

"It will be hard there [in the second leg]. I know this stadium before because of my time at Barcelona but we don't have time to think about the game there we have to think about our game at the weekend so that's all for us."

Andy Robertson added: "We had a few chances in the first half, trying to break them down. We had a bit of momentum after the first goal and the noise in here was incredible. It took us to the second one. We would have liked one more but a clean sheet and two goals, we can't argue with that.

"It is the semi-final of the Champions League. If you can't run around for 90 minutes in this kind of game, when will you? Our intensity has been high last couple of games. We have had a hectic schedule but we are enjoying it. There is still work to do but we are happy."

Villarreal have never reached the Champions League final in their history. They've only reached the semi-finals once before, losing 1-0 on aggregate to Arsenal in 2006. The Gunners went on to lose the final to Barcelona, which ironically took place in Paris.

In fact, Villarreal's victory in the Europa League final last season was their first major trophy. The Spanish minnows have never won La Liga nor the Copa del Rey. Their best league finish came in 2007-08, when they ended up second behind Real Madrid.

It's important to note Emery has beaten Klopp's Liverpool before. The Spaniard guided Sevilla to a 3-1 victory in the Europa League final in May 2016, denying Klopp the chance to win his maiden trophy at Anfield. The German has won five trophies since, however.

Emery has threatened the second leg will be "different", telling BT Sport. "It is very important in our home to change something, maybe tactically. They are going to suffer more than tonight."
