Jurgen Klopp hits out at media in staunch defence of Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson

Jurgen Klopp has hit out at suggestions Jordan Henderson is to blame for Liverpool’s midfield struggles this season.

The German launched a passionate defence of the club captain, who has not started a Premier League game since last month’s loss at Brighton.

Monday’s huge Merseyside derby will mark four weeks since the England international – previously so important to Klopp’s team – appeared from the off.

During Friday’s pre-match press conference, the Liverpool boss was asked whether or not his team were missing Henderson’s impact.

“I don’t understand why we talk about one player, I mean it,” he said.

“Everyone knows how much I respect him but it’s not about one player.

“I don’t like to say it but it’s true, you are not able to deal with these things when I talk about one player you make it the subject.

“Henderson is not our problem, he never was and never will be.”

Henderson has played in a staggering 91 games since the start of last season for club and country, though could make his first start since January against Everton.

Thiago Alcantara is struggling with a hip injury, while Fabinho has been out of form all season.

Diogo Jota, however, is closing in on a return and could be involved at Anfield.
