Jurgen Klopp hails "perfect player" who is thriving after Trent Alexander-Arnold switch

Jurgen Klopp has hailed Cody Gakpo as the "perfect player" for the no.9 role after impressing in Liverpool's 4-3 victory over Tottenham on Sunday.

The Dutchman didn't find his name on the scoresheet but grabbed two assists as Klopp's men continued their sharp improvement in form. Curtis Jones opened the scoring with a low finish before Gakpo set up Liverpool's second of the game - cutting the ball back for Luis Diaz to fire home.

Mohamed Salah added Liverpool's third from the penalty spot in the 15th minute after Gakpo was tripped inside the area. Tottenham fought back, however, as Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Richarlison struck to turn the game around and put Spurs back on course for a point.

But Diogo Jota struck in the 94th minute to secure a dramatic win for Klopp's men. Ahead of Liverpool's game against Fulham, the Reds boss hailed where they have improved after securing their fourth successive Premier League victory to move them into fifth.

He said: "The real reason for the improvement is the general defending. There are moments where we defend well and Trent can pop up in a different space. But it's helped Fabinho as well. You can see how he's flourishing now. Cody Gakpo is a perfect player for the central space. Everybody buys into it. It's a like a breath of fresh air."

Klopp highlighted Trent Alexander-Arnold's role in Liverpool's up-turn in form and how it has helped the team flourish generally. The defender has notched at least one assist in his last five appearances, having moved into more of a central and offensive position.

"We've always known he has the potential to do it," Klopp told Sky Sports. "But, to play a role, it's not about a player. It's about having the whole system in place. You have to set it up. We have to train."

He added: "It's not just been [discussions between] me and [Klopp], it's a team system. It's getting the best out of players and finding a system that works best for us that is a little different from what we are used to doing.

"I do definitely [enjoy it]. I wouldn't say it's further up. It's not like I'm getting in the box and scoring goals. It's more in the centre of the pitch and I enjoy getting on the ball and passing and being creative in those areas."

Liverpool host Fulham on Wednesday with a chance to close the gap on the top four. The Reds currently sit fifth, seven points behind Man Utd, although Klopp's have played an extra game.
